To an Infinity Ring and Beyond

Infinity; the idea that something will go on forever—be infinite. We all like the idea of life being infinite, or time being a concept that carries on regardless, but in truth, everything we understand about life is finite. However, it doesn’t prevent us from wishing for infinity or promising infinity to others with our affection and love. When we buy sterling silver infinity rings, or gold rings or other metal infinity rings for our significant other’s we are offering them as a gesture of infinite love to them. Our feelings for them, in that moment, will never diminish and we want to give them a gift that represents that love.

The infinity symbol resembles the number 8 lying on its side and it is essentially an infinite line that has no beginning and no end. Originally deriving from Latin and meaning ‘unboundedness’ the word began life as infinitas but from the Latin it became infinity when translated to English. The symbol is also used in mathematics but referred to as “an infinite number of terms” and is associated with an endless number.

Speaking of Latin, many people are not aware of the name ‘arguros’ or ‘argentum’. Argentum has a chemical symbol Ag which we, in modern times, associate with the metal element known as silver. We wear sterling silver jewelry in the shape of infinity rings, earrings,, necklaces and bracelets. We adorn our bodies with Ag and Au—gold—and we pretty ourselves with jewels and precious stones. Oftentimes when we give a gift of jewelry to a loved one we do so with a view to expressing how we feel. A silver engagement ring can be offered at a proposal of marriage, a friendship ring can be given as an expression of long term affection and a gift from one parent to a child or vice versa. There are hundreds of reasons why we might choose to give a ring to cherished one and each ring is chosen with pride and care. Infinity rings usually have the infinity sign carved into the silver or molded out of the silver during its processing. The symbol can be part of a ring in many way and they can also have precious stones or gems inside them.
