The story or history of the Bhagavad Gita (or Gita) is tied to the early history of Indian philosophy and religion. The text, one included as part of the larger Mahabharata, a classic literary epic, is currently viewed as one of Hindu’s major texts. It helps to depict the very essence of the religion. The role Krishna plays in the Gita is one reason why it, together with the Vedas and the Upanishads, have endured over the centuries since their origin.
Being able to buy Bhagavad Gita online has helped to increase the availability of this ancient philosophical and religious work. Since its origins, the work has retained its spiritual appeal. It has also influenced many secular practices, including Yoga. Yet, it was not the most popular work when it first emerged.
Origins
It is not possible to say exactly when the work was written nor is it feasible to say who the author is. Yet it can be said there are two possible major datings of the Gita. One is based on historical information. Another dates the work according to the content of the Bhagavad Gita. In particular some followers of Krishna look to what Krishna says to pin-point its origins.
Accordingly, the scholars believe the work first appeared in its early form between 200 and 100 BC. Some place it back further in time. They state the process began as early as 500 BC. However, between 200 and 300 AD, it finally emerged in its finished form.
Certain followers of Krishna do not accept this. They believe the work was invented more than 120 million years ago. They base this on what Krishna says to Arunja in the text. He states:
I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Iksvaku. The supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost. (Bhagavad Gita 4.1 & 4.2)
Rise in Popularity
Whatever its origins, the work did not become well-known outside of India until the late 18th century. In 1874 Charles Wilkins made the work accessible by translating it from Sanskrit into English. From there on it became increasingly popular in Western society and among the Anglophiles in India.
