The Pros and Cons of Marble Floor Tile

by | Feb 21, 2014 | Home Improvement

Marble is a type of rock that starts out as a limestone and then turns into something completely different due to the pressure and temperature that it is exposed to beneath the earth’s surface. When placed in homes, marble is a luxurious and beautiful material that looks great in any room in the home. At the same time, however, it does have some negatives that you should consider before committing to this or any other material.

The Look
The natural beauty of marble floor tile is what attracts most to this material. It is available in a number of different colors, with each slab having its own unique character. It also has the ability to take on a great deal of polish, which allows you to make the floor very shiny and smooth. You might also notice that marble has a translucent quality, due to the fact that light is able to penetrate it. This can give your floors a dramatic glow when light shines off it at the right angle, which is a great add-on for any room in the house.

Very Durable
Since marble is a very hard stone, it can withstand all types of abuse. The hardness means that your floors are unlikely to scratch if you drag furniture across it and that it will not chip if you drop dishes on the floor. This gives marble floor tile an exceptionally long lifespan, as it is highly unlikely that you will ever have to replace your floors again.

Expensive to Purchase and Maintain
Perhaps the main drawback of going with marble floor tile is the cost. Each tile will cost you between four and 10 times more than ceramic tile, depending on the size and quality of the marble. If you plan to tile your entire house, you can see how quickly the cost will add up when using marble. You will also have to polish and clean the tiles regularly, as they lose their shine quite quickly. You will need to purchase a special cleaner that does not include chlorine, since chlorine can sometimes ruin the polish, causing you to have to redo it.
