Windows in Normal, IL: Understanding the Various Parts

by | Mar 5, 2014 | Home Improvement

For most people, window shopping can be somewhat of an intimidating experience. Most people initially assume that a window is nothing more than a piece of glass that is housed inside of a frame. However, they are in fact so much more than this. Consequently, choosing the right type of window can often pose a challenge. How well particular styles of Windows in Normal, IL will work, should always start with a breakdown of the three main parts of every window: the glass, pane and frame.

Glass

The first topic to tackle is glass. Contrary to what you might have originally thought -; all glass is not the same. Thanks to advancements in technology, glass comes in a number of different varieties. One of the more popular options includes low-E glass. Low-E glass is a type of glass that reflects heat away. So, during the summer months, the window will reflect heat away from the home and during the winter it will reflect the heat back inside of the home, instead of allowing it to escape. This type of glass provides for excellent savings on both heating and cooling cost.

Pane

Another component of all Windows in Normal, IL is the pane. Windows are currently available in either a double-pane or triple-pane style. Many years ago homeowners also had the option to select from single-pane windows, but manufactures don’t develop that style anymore. To make it easier to understand, pane basically refers to the layers of glass that the window has. So a double-pane window would have two layers, while a triple-pane window would have three. The higher the number of panes, the better the temperature regulation and the less sound that will travel both in and out of the home. However, on the downside, the more panes, the more the purchase cost.

Frame

Last, but certainly not least is the frame. Popular window frame options include both wood and vinyl. Wood is quite popular because of its style qualities and the fact that it does an excellent job at keeping heat inside the home. However, it is somewhat on the expensive side. On the other hand, vinyl is a more cost effective option, but it does not provide quite as much thermal insulation as a wood frame would.
