When most people think of pizza, Italy instantly comes to mind. However, pizza is a very popular dish nationwide. In fact, pizza has become so popular that it is not uncommon for each region to add a touch of local flavor to create a pizza taste uniquely their own. For example, Chicago is known for its deep dish crust pizzas. Chicago style pizzas typically boast crusts up to three inches high, and the ingredients are assembled in a slightly different order than usual (i.e. cheese on the bottom, heavy tomato sauce on the top). The city is known for its stuffed pizzas as well. In New York, pizza crusts are considerably thinner. New York style pizzas are wide, crispy, and flexible enough to fold in half. New York style pizzas tend to not be as heavy on the sauce as Chicago style pizza.
Perhaps the most popular style of pizza not actually originated in the region for which it is named, is Hawaiian style pizza. History suggests that Hawaiian style pizza was actually invented in Canada. Like its pizza counterparts, Hawaiian style pizza contains a base of cheese and tomato sauce. However, instead of toppings like pepperoni or beef, Pizza in Honolulu is topped with ham and pineapple giving it a flavorful and sweet taste. The type of ham used is also referred to as Canadian bacon. Some versions of Pizza in Honolulu may include onions or peppers.
Hawaiian style pizza is primary popular outside of the actual region. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given its namesake, Hawaiian pizza has not gained that large of a following on the island of Hawaii. Still, almost every major pizza retailer in the U.S. has a Hawaiian style pizza option on their menu. Hawaiian pizza is actually most popular in Australia, where it accounts for 15% of that region’s total pizza sales. Hawaiian pizza has also found favor in Canada, Sweden, and other parts of Europe. In Hawaii, despite the many diverse restaurants on the island, residents seem to favor more traditional pizza toppings.
