Things to know when buying auto glass

by | Mar 1, 2013 | Business

Anyone who owns a car will need to replace a window from time to time. Accidents do happen and a small crack in any part of a car window can have dangerous consequences. These windows have to provide full visibility, as well as safety and security. If you are looking for an auto glass company, you need to make sure they know what they are doing if they repair or replace your car window.

You can find an auto glass company in Minneapolis mn, or in any other city or state in the US, simply by searching on the internet. But make sure you find one approved by the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC). The AGSC approves standards of safety which all its certified partners must adhere to, ensuring you piece of mind.

Laminated glass

Most car windows are made from laminated glass. This glass, on impact, doesn’t shatter into tiny pieces because of the interlayer of Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) that is holding the broken glass pieces together. This in turn prevents the broken glass from becoming dangerous flying objects that may cause serious injuries – or even fatal ones. Because of its safety profile, most windshields at the front of the car are made of laminated glass. This type of glass can maintain its structure in a collision and has an added layer of safety.

Toughened glass

Sometimes referred to as Tempered Glass, this type of glass can be between four to five times stronger than normal glass. This glass is widely used in cars on everything except the windscreen. They can withstand stress and objects being thrown at them and provide security for occupants inside the vehicle. But they are also known to shatter if the force is great enough.

Reflected/tinted glass

If security and privacy are your concern, then you should consider reflected or tinted glass for your vehicle. This glass is usually made from float glass. Float glass is manufactured using a thin sheet of glass which is repeatedly passed over molten tin.

It is then treated with a reflective metal on one side, or another “tinting” process, to achieve the desired look. With reflective glass an owner of a vehicle can see out, but no one can see in. This is the same, generally for tinted glass, except there is some degree of interior visibility from close up.
However, this type of glass is not appropriate for windshields and is in fact illegal. Windshields need to be as transparent as possible for safety reasons. This is because you want other drivers to see you and be able to communicate with you through the windshield if necessary. If safety or privacy is your concern, then chose this type of glass for your car but for the windshield stick to laminated glass.
